Car diagnostics in Richmond, know why the light is on

A check engine light tells you something is wrong but not what. A scan tool reads a trouble code, but the code is only the starting point. A mobile provider can scan your car, test the suspect parts and tell you what is needed. Richmond Mobile Mechanic does not do the work. We pass your enquiry to an independent provider who does.

What to look for

How to tell it is time for car diagnostics.

  • The check engine light is on or flashing
  • The engine runs rough or hesitates
  • Fuel economy has dropped noticeably
  • The car stalls or idles unevenly
  • You smell fuel or exhaust
  • The car is in limp mode with reduced power

What to expect

Car Diagnostics: what is involved.

A flashing check engine light usually means an active misfire that can damage the catalytic converter. Pull over when it is safe, switch off and do not keep driving until the car has been checked. A steady light is less urgent but should not be ignored.

The provider connects a scan tool and reads stored codes and live data. A code such as a misfire or oxygen sensor fault points to an area, not a specific part. Proper diagnosis then tests the suspect parts, for example checking ignition coils, vacuum leaks or fuel trims, before recommending a repair.

Be wary of anyone who replaces parts based only on a code. Ask the provider to explain what they tested and why. Some faults need shop equipment, and a good provider will say so. BC's AirCare emissions testing program ended in 2014, so there is no routine emissions test to pass before registration.

Step by step

What happens after you get in touch.

  1. Describe what you see

Note when the light came on, any warning messages and how the car drives.

  2. Scan and read data

The provider reads stored codes and live data from the engine computer.

  3. Test the likely cause

The provider tests the suspected parts rather than guessing from the code alone.

  4. Explain and quote

The provider should explain the fault clearly. Ask for a written quote to repair it.

Cost

What car diagnostics costs in Richmond.

One Metro Vancouver mobile company publishes a diagnostic starting price of $125, labour only, and its own FAQ says $150. Treat that as one example, not a local rate. Price generally depends on how long testing takes, how common the fault is for your vehicle and whether specialty tools are needed. Ask whether the diagnostic fee is credited toward the repair if you proceed.

The provider sets the price. Ask for the diagnostic fee and repair quote in writing.

FAQ

Car Diagnostics questions.

Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?

A steady light usually allows short, careful driving until you can get it checked. A flashing light, power loss or strange smells mean you should stop and get help. Continued driving can cause expensive damage.

Can a scan tool code tell the provider exactly what part is broken?

Not always. A code points to a system or circuit, and the actual cause can be a part, a wire or a leak. Ask the provider what tests they did beyond reading the code.

Do I need an emissions test in BC after a repair?

BC's AirCare program ended on December 31, 2014, so there is generally no routine emissions test for passenger vehicles. Check with ICBC or the province if you are unsure about your situation.
